SYO Expression of Interest Form
Thank you for showing interest in your child joining SYO. Please read the following information below before submitting an expression of interest form.
Ethos:
For a lot of young musicians in Sheffield and the surrounding areas, this is the first time they may be joining a full force orchestra. We are a friendly, inclusive orchestra that plays a prominent artistic and educational role in Sheffield. Our weekly Saturday term-time rehearsals (10:00am-12:30pm) means we can offer in depth musical training, unique performance opportunities and provide socials that bring the SYO family together.
Performance Standard:
SYO is not an auditioned ensemble as we want as many young musicians in Sheffield to get involved in music making.
We recommend a standard of ABRSM Grade 5 for tutti players and a standard of ABRSM Grade 7 for section principals. This ensures that we focus more of our attention on developing ensemble skills and characterful playing and less on the mechanics of performance.
The best way of knowing if your child is ready to join, is for them to attend a taster rehearsal.
What to expect at a free taster rehearsal:
Parents are free to attend the taster rehearsal to watch and speak to our friendly parents committee. For the young musician, they will meet the music director who will seat them next to a current member of the orchestra. All that is expected is for them to have a go and have fun!
Within the rehearsal they will develop: ensemble skills, musicianship, confidence and even learn how to conduct!
There is opportunity for social time with the other musicians coupled with home-made cake!
Formally joining:
After the taster rehearsal, if the young musician wishes to join the orchestra then we can pass on a formal joining form to the family. Fees per player is £120/year (the most affordable youth orchestra in the county) - however bursaries are avaliable for families who are concerned about affordability.
We do offer scholarships (lessons and instrument hire) for musicians playing uncommon orchestral instruments who wish to join SYO. Please do mention this in your initial enquiry if you are interested.
